Everything was fine till 21st September 2015 when Joshi’s company was looking for volunteers to check Blood pressure and Blood sugar. Results were shocking his fasting BS was way too high (220 and 200 on two separate days) and PPBS 240 and 237 (on two separate days). Now his fasting blood sugar levels are less than 100 mg/dl, So how did he make it read how Sumant Joshi successfully reversed his diabetes.
Tell us About you?
I am Sumant Joshi from Pune, India. My age is 40 years and I am a Geologist by profession , I am happy to say I was a Diabetic, I want to say it for ever. Don’t mistake me, I am not cured of Diabetes, it is just reversed. I mean to say I am off medication and controlling my blood sugar levels well now, read further to know how did I do it.
When did you came to know about your condition ?
I was detected high BS at company’s clinic. They were looking for volunteer’s to check BP and BS. I was under the impression that my BP is high and BS is alright. But after the tests it was the other way around. My fasting BS was way too high (220 and 200 on two separate days) and PPBS 240 and 237 on two separate days).
What was your reaction when you got diagnosed with this condition?
I was in a complete shock…didn’t know what to do. The doctor told me to get my diet in control or i’ll be facing more medical problems soon.
How did your Doctor confirm if you are prediabetic, Diabetic type1 or type 2 ?
My company doctored referred me to another doctor who asked me to do HbA1C test. My HbA1C on detection on diabetes was 8.3%. Almost a year ago my lipid profile was getting really bad (TG at 147 and HDL at 29) this indicated i had way too much of insulin resistance. (TG/HDL ratio >5).
What lifestyle changes did you make to overcome / manage this condition
I brought myself a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00NDI3616″ locale=”IN” tag=”readitt-21″]pedometer[/easyazon_link] and made sure that i waked atleast 10,000 steps a day. Initially i used to walk almost 20,000 steps a day. Stopped using lift. Stopped using my bike/ car for small things. Started doing Yoga, push ups. Started monitoring my weight with in 6 months my weight came down from +83 kg to current level of 63 kg.
What are your fasting blood glucose levels now?
84 mg/dl (thats amazing, we all diabetics will love to see that reading on glucometer)
What is your recent HBA1C %
< 5% (hurrah 5% is normal, diabetes reversed)
How important do you think is diet for managing diabetes?
I stopped all fast acting carbs at one go. (sugar/ maida/ rice). Brought myself a glucometer and started testing myself after every meal. Checked what caused me a rise in Blood Sugar levels and what did not. Reduced number of rotis in my diet. Replaced them with more vegis. Added healthy fats such as cheese, [easyazon_link identifier=”B00ZX1PO5M” locale=”IN” tag=”readitt-21″]Virgin Coconut Oil[/easyazon_link] in my diet.
What do you prefer to have in Breakfast ?
My day starts with 5-6 Almonds.
After morning walk, i have one roti with more daal (proteins) or vegi’s.
What do you have in lunch?
2 rotis and vegis plus one cup of buttermilk.
Do you snack often?
4pm is normally my snack time. i take 3-4 walnuts with slice of gouda cheese or any natural cheese.
What do you have for dinner?
I tend to spike more after dinner for some reasons. So, my dinner is very limited with less carbs and fewer proteins. I mostly take paneer bhurjee, bottle gourd or lady finger with just half roti.
Are you doing any workout and how important is workout in managing your condition?
I’ve constantly been walking 10,000 steps a day for last 9 months. This has helped me lose my weight and brining down my sugar levels.
How often do you check your blood glucose levels?
4 times a day
How does monitoring your blood glucose levels help you?
I’ve been checking my BS levels after every meal. I know what causes my blood sugar levels to go skywards. Sometimes it is from unusual suspects like dahi/yoghurt or French coffee.
Which blood glucose meter do you use and why did you choose to use that?
I’ve been using [easyazon_link identifier=”B01GO0HBF6″ locale=”IN” tag=”readitt-21″]Accu check Active[/easyazon_link]. I’ve tried to correlate the readings on it with lab tests. I found meter readings tend to be 5 points higher than lab readings.

Diet and exercise are the key to beat the diabetes. Sugar is the real culprit, but dietary fat is not. People avoid fat and add more carbs to their diet causing more problems.
